Here is a collection of odd or interesting concretions gathered from various parts of Arkansas. This one in the above pictures is just begging to be called a fossilized egg. These are a couple of disk-shaped concretions that grew between beds of shale. If we were to cut them open they would look something like these next ones.

These concretions occur in clays that have undergone shrinkage, where cracks will appear at the center following dehydration. Septarian concretions often contain calcite, though in some cases they can contain pyrite. The concretion may also display a septarian pattern, or it may contain golden barite crystals in the cavities. Other marine fossils, notably ammonites, are found in large concretions in the Eagle Ford shale of the Cretaceous period exposed and quarried around Dallas, Texas.

Septarian concretions in the Staffin Shales Formation (Kimmeridgian, Isle of Skye) allow controls on concretion rheology and septarian cracking to be investigated. Stratabound concretions consist of anhedral ferroan calcite microspar enclosing clay and minor pyrite.
